Artist Comment: This is a half-scale pencil and conte study for the oil painting "Harpist At The Cross-Cultural Garden Party." In the oil composition, I didn't like the lines of the left-most figure, so I bent the figure forward. Then I changed her to a male figure. I also removed the cats, because that area of the composition is a rest area and not a focal point. The cats became too much visual weight, especially when the strong lines of the harp body are already leading there. I added a demon boy peeking through the harp strings instead (in the painting), which weakens that strong harp line.
