At Oxford With Edith
Description: A young female student hurries to catch Edith Morley, who is depicted as older student and mentor in this imagined scene at an Oxford canal bridge in the late 19th century. Two girls try to catch butterflies, which are symbolic of transformation.

Artist Comment: Edith Morley was a pioneering figure in women's equality in late 19th century and early 20th century Britain. She was a suffragette and the first woman to be appointed as a chair at a university level institution in Britain. I liked this scene from touring Oxford using Google streetview. I invented meaningful figures involving a strong female lead who attended Oxford, and used an available photograph on the web to arrive at a likeness of Edith Morley from the side.
